Maintenance Tips and Precautions for Perkins Engine Cooling Systems

Maintenance Tips and Precautions for Perkins Engine Cooling Systems

The cooling system acts as the core protection component of every Perkins diesel engine. Whether installed on agricultural tractors, stationary generators, excavators or harvesters, improper cooling system maintenance will directly result in engine overheating. Severe overheating may lead to cylinder head deformation, piston seizure, cylinder liner damage and expensive engine overhauls.

For equipment operators and repair shop technicians, standardized daily inspection and regular servicing can effectively reduce unexpected breakdowns. Below we share practical maintenance tips and key precautions for Perkins engine cooling systems.

1. Select the Correct Coolant and Avoid Mixing Coolant Types

Always use coolant specifications recommended by Perkins. Do not mix different brands or different chemical formula coolants. Mixed coolant triggers chemical reactions, forming sludge and scale inside the radiator, water channels and engine block.

Never rely on pure water for long-term cooling. Tap water contains mineral substances that produce scale and corrode internal components. Coolant also provides anti-freezing and anti-corrosion protection all year round.

2. Check Coolant Level Only When the Engine Is Cool

Develop a habit of checking the coolant level before daily startup. Low coolant concentration reduces heat dissipation efficiency.

Important safety reminder: Do not open the radiator cap when the engine is hot. High-pressure hot coolant may spray out and cause scald injuries. Wait until the temperature drops completely before topping up coolant.

3. Keep Radiator and Intercooler Surfaces Clean

Agricultural and construction sites are full of dust, straw debris, mud and sand. These contaminants stick tightly to the radiator fins and block airflow. Even functional cooling components cannot dissipate heat normally with blocked radiators.

Clean the radiator surface regularly with low-pressure air or water. Avoid high-pressure water guns that bend radiator fins and permanently damage the radiator.

4. Regularly Inspect Water Pump, Hoses and Seals

The water pump drives coolant circulation. Pay attention to leakage traces at the water pump shaft seal. Aging rubber hoses will harden, crack and leak under continuous high temperature.

Many sudden overheating failures are caused by burst cooling hoses. Replace aged hoses and faulty seals proactively during routine maintenance rather than waiting for leakage failures.

5. Test Thermostat Performance During Periodic Maintenance

The thermostat controls coolant circulation temperature. Two typical thermostat faults create different troubles:

  • Stuck closed: Coolant cannot circulate, leading to rapid engine overheating.
  • Stuck open: The engine stays at low operating temperature, increasing fuel consumption and accelerating internal component wear.

Test thermostat opening temperature during each major maintenance and replace defective thermostats immediately.

6. Avoid Long-Term Continuous Overload Operation

When Perkins engines run under full load for dozens of hours continuously, the cooling system works under maximum pressure. Proper intermittent rest helps lower overall engine temperature and reduces the burden on cooling assemblies.
